Washington, DC Electric Shoppers Get Deadline Reprieve
Washington DC The Washington DC Public Utilities Commission has decided to extend the shopping period for electric accounts in the PEPCO Washington, DC area. It had formerly ruled that any customer served by the utility as of February 8th, 2005 (the date when new Standard Offer Service (SOS) rates will take effect) would be forced to remain on tariff rates for 12 months before being able to shop again. Several groups opposed this ruling and requested it be reconsidered in favor of a 12-month minimum stay upon a customer's return to tariff. Though the PUC ruling does not overturn the minimum stay provision for the initial year of SOS, it did revise the timeframe to extend the deadline for switching until the close of the third billing cycle after February 8, 2005.

The new SOS rate represents an average increase for small commercial customers of 23.6%, more for larger customers. At the same time, recent decreases in natural gas and electricity wholesale rates and input from competitive suppliers indicate that considerable savings relative to this increased SOS rate may be available. You should seriously consider soliciting bids from competitive suppliers in time to take advantage of current lower rates, switch service and avoid the higher rates for the 12-month minimum stay.

The EnergyWindow Web-based energy sourcing tool enables you to solicit competitive bids with a minimum of effort and in time to meet the PUC deadline. EnergyWindow is licensed in Washington, DC and can gather your historical data very quickly and efficiently via EDI.
